Brian McKay - Central Park Artwork Update

"It is sad to report that work has begun to dismantle sections of the Brian McKay masterwork in Central Park to make way for a coffee shop. All Attempts to dissuade the owners that their actions amount to an extreme act of cultural vandalism have been to no avail. Public protests, deputations, endless letter to Government Ministers and arts patrons have made little impact and the big end of town as usual will have its way. Advocacy is not wasted and the memory of this action must serve as a warning that we have a way to go in securing the cultural assets of our state (ie the Burrup) for the longer term." - Tony Jones

Percent for Art: Woolworths Inglewood

Recently, the Perth Voice reported that the application for the Woolworths' Inglewood development at the former Bunnings site, argues they shouldn’t have to comply with the City of Stirling’s provision for percent for public art in their draft local planning policy. 

The City is currently working towards the implementation of a new Public Art Strategy in 2019 and have said they will take care to ensure that any public art policy for private developments is well supported by robust strategic planning and thorough consultation to ensure the resulting public art projects are of genuine benefit to the community.

Artsource representatives and local artists attended the Community Drop in Session, on site at the Inglewood Markets on Monday 4 February, to provide feedback and discuss the development proposal. We encourage continued and further indepth discussions about how best to deliver Percent for Art for the benefit of all and have earmarked this topic for discussion in our upcoming forum.
