Joel Smoker

Biography

Joel Smoker was born in Derby, WA, in 1952 and grew up in Kimberley towns where he developed a life long love of the Australian landscape. He has used this fascination as an inspiration in the creation of artworks in the mediums of ceramics, painting, pastel drawings, screen printing, photography and recorded songs. Joel has exhibited widely in Art galleries in towns and cities around Australia. His work is represented in the collections of the Art Gallery of WA, the Fremantle City Council, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery, the Shire of Mundaring, the National Gallery of Victoria nd numerous private collections. Joel has published two books of his art; the Way Out West book of his pastel drawings and the The Kimberley Series book of photographs. Joel has recently moved to Denmark with his wife, Alexis, where they have built a studio in which to work.

Artist Statement

Joel Smoker has worked in a variety of Art media in his long history as an exhibiting artist. Currently he is working with pastel pencils and pastel chalks on paper. The inspiration for his pastels is taken from his journeys around Western Australia featuring both natural and manmade subjects.
